Fans of THE TIME TUNNEL were treated to the release of the first half of this series on DVD in early 2006. That situation was fantastic in terms of the visual clarity and restoration work done to compose these tranfers truly considerable in quality. The praise for Fox is well-deserved, as the episodes looked better than they ever had before.

28 THE KIDNAPPERS-March 24, 1967

29 RAIDERS FROM OUTER SPACE-March 31, 1967

30 TOWN OF TERROR-April 7, 1967

Though the writing quality of some of the episodes tended to deteriorate in the second half, there were tranquil some aesthetic episodes in this bunch. End TWO BY TWO plunges our heroes onto a Pacific Island where a sunless chapter of World War Two plays out.

CHASE THROUGH TIME features three time-transfers sending the scientists over a two million year timespan. And other episodes deal with historical figures like William Bonney (”Billy The Kid”), Machiavelli, himself displaced in time to the American Civil War, and even Biblical hero, Joshua.

And then there’s the aliens… Well, this IS an Irwin Allen series, and you really didn’t deem that the LOST IN State costumes would go to kill, did you?

As a bonus, this location is also featuring the 1976 TV-movie that Irwin Allen developed called THE TIME TRAVELERS. It featured Sam Groom (”Jerry” from THE TIME TUNNEL) and Tom Halick as a pair from the expose day who are sent relieve in time to accumulate and withhold a long-lost cure to a present-day epidemic. Sent abet to Stale Chicago, they locate the doctor who developed the cure (played by Richard Basehart) and have to procure it from him before the stout fire destroys the town. This film was a pilot for another possible time-travel series. It aired on ABC, but was never picked up as a series. The script was from an thought by Rod Serling.

Fans of THE TIME TUNNEL are glad that this series will finally be out in its entirety. Modern fans have developed with the release of the first area. All in all, 2006, the fortieth anniversary of THE TIME TUNNEL, is shaping up to be a dazzling estimable year.

While the second collection of 15 episodes from the single season of THE TIME TUNNEL (ABC 1966-67) doesn’t necessarily consistently shine quite as brightly as the initial group comprising the jabber in volume one there are composed some commendably well done segments to be found nonetheless that includes “Extinguish Two By Two,” “The Walls of Jericho,” “Idol of Death,” “Billy the Kid,” “Pirates of Deadman’s Island,” Stir Through Time,” “The Death Merchant” and “Attack of the Barbarians” being the more worthy.

It is at this midway point in the season that producer-creator Irwin Allen broadens the series’ premise to include capricously unique encounters with Robin Hood, Merlin the Magician, the mad spirit of the Roman Emperor Nero and even extraterrestrial beings (on four separate occasions) .

Featured celebrity guest-stars and primitive film and tv performers impressively in evidence are Robert Duvall, Mako, Robert Walker, Jr., Eduardo Cianelli, Malachi Throne, Michael Ansara, Byron Foulger, Richard Jaeckel, Myrna Fahey, Allan Case, Paul Mantee, Abraham Sofaer, Lawrence Montaigne, Christopher Carey, Mabel Albertson, Anthony Caruso, Vitina Marcus, Del Monroe, Michael Pate, Donald Herron, John Hoyt, Lisa Gaye, Arthur Batanides, Jan Merlin, Peter Brocco, Ronald Long, Phillip Ahn, Arnold Moss and John Saxon.

The remaining 15 episodes are:

16) “The Revenge of Robin Hood” (30/12/1966)

17) “Destroy Two By Two” (06/01/1967)

8) “Visitors from Beyond the Stars” (13/01/1967)

19) “The Ghost of Nero” (20/01/1967)

20) “The Walls of Jericho” (27/01/1967)

21) “Idol of Death” (03/02/1967)

22) “Billy the Kid” (10/02/1967)

23) “Pirates of Deadman’s Island” (17/10/1967)

24) “Toddle Through Time” (24/02/1967)

25) “The Death Merchant” (03/03/1967)

26) “Attack of the Barbarians” (10/03/1967)

27) “Merlin the Magician” (17/03/1967)

8) “The Kidnappers” (24/03/1967)

29) “Raiders from Outer Dwelling” (31/03/1967)

30) “Town of Panic” (07/04/1967)

As in the previous volume one area, series fans can perceive forward to pristine video transfers taken from fully restored and digitally remastered 35mm source elements with each segment presented, including the modern cliffhanger endings, complete and intact.

Welcome supplementary archival material will consist of the made-for-tv film TIME TRAVELLERS (1976) which was intended as Irwin Allen’s follow-up to his 1960s SF tv classic (starring extinct TIME TUNNEL alumni Sam Groom and derived from a anecdote thought credited to Rod Serling) along with unusual series cast member interviews of James Darren, Robert Colbert, Lee Meriwether and Whit Bissell in addition to a (roughly) 3 small special presentation of the shelved 2002 TIME TUNNEL revival grief pilot will also be included to further augment this exceptional 4-disc collection.

Despite the fact that our two valorous time travellers were never returned home again (due to the show’s premature cancellation after only a single season) THE TIME TUNNEL (with its stellar luminary casting from Hollywood’s finest, always diverse and challenging storylines and groundbreaking Emmy Award winning visual effects) remains to be an enduring, immensely accepted Television of the Wonderful favourite since its inaugural primetime airing nearly 40 years later that continues to enthrall and delight fresh generations of fans captivated by errant Project Tic-Toc scientists Tony Newman and Doug Phillips’ ongoing exploits into current realms of colourful adventure and intriguing excitement that was as grand an invention of the smart imaginations exhibited by the contributing staff writers as it was a reflection of the fine pages in history.

I am not generally an Adam Sandler fan, but this film really surprised me. I liked it very considerable, and the music broken-down brought attend a lot of grand memories. He plays a down on his luck wedding singer that is left at the alter, and when he meets Julia played by Drew Barrymore, sparks flit. I was very surprised by the chemistry Sandler and Barrymore have on shroud. A romance with a pleasurable amount of comedy mixed in is the perfect formula.

Buy,Download, Or Stream The Wedding Singer! Click Here

This was one of Adam’s breakthrough films before pointless blockbusters like “Waterboy” and “Sizable Daddy”. While those films have a few silly moments and are OK, this one is very cleaver and showcases Sandler as a human being rather than unprejudiced some lifeless hick or objective some loud bastard.

“The Wedding Singer” is about Robbie Hart, an average guy, that lives a simple suburban life with a hot fiancée and a wintry gig in the mid eighties. Life is mountainous until his lady dumps him. He’s crushed and his career as a weeding singer goes down the toilet as he sinks into a depression that includes listening to The Cure. Sounds like a gigantic depression. Anyway, a young girl named Julie (Drew Barrymore) helps him to salvage his life help together. The only spot is that she is engaged to a smug yuppie loser. So what’s going to happen. Well, like in most eighties comedies, the hero will try to accumulate over the girl even if it takes the attend of Billy Idol!

Buy,Download, Or Stream The Wedding Singer! Click Here

Not the most unusual record in the world, and the chemistry is only OK between Drew and Adam, but its really all the eighties jokes that effect this film so very comic. People have niches and dress in styles. People dress up like “characters” like Madonna, Don Johnson, Boy George and even the guy from Flock of Seagulls. The combination of an awesome soundtrack and ’80s clichés, not to mention spacious acting (Steve Buschemi’s cameo steals the present) acquire the film a winner. Adam can really act like a normal romantic and this movie proves it. Too dreadful so many people assume him as a moron. Comedy lovers and Sandler fanatics unite and grasp this film.

I was one of the millions who probably heard of Harvey Milk at some point in my life, but never connected any dots to his life. Then one summer day, while housesitting, I found an feeble VHS tape of this documentary called “The Times of Harvey Milk”. Not having anything better to do, I popped it in the VCR and sat support to perceive. Two hours later, my life, perspectives, and outlooks were dramatically transformed by meeting Supervisor Harvey Milk. So it is with mammoth excitement that this monumental film which pays tribute to a monumental time finally comes to DVD, and warrants my attention for my 200th review.

“The Times of Harvey Milk” is a transformative documentary both in style and information, created by visionary filmmakers Recall Epstein and Richard Schmiechen. The film not only covers the life of Milk, but the times which surrounded him that allows for a broader, more in-depth memoir. From the opening moments of the film, we learn of Harvey’s untimely death, so as not to aggrandize it. Through personal interviews, newsreel coverage, and personal film shot at sure events, everything is brought to a proper, intense focus. You feel as if you are watching the events unfold as San Franscians must have done in the gradual 1970’s.

The incandescent stars of the film are the personal interviews given by people who knew Harvey best. Tom Ammiano, friend of Harvey, gives the film a sense of outrage of the assassinations. Jim Elliot gives a heartwarming straight man, unionist perspective to demonstrate us Harvey’s universality. Henry Der allows us to ogle Harvey’s political side. Jannine Yeoman’s covering of the Milk campaign and post -assassination trial gives a sense of immediacy and urgency to the epic, and a more professional viewpoint. Bill Kraus, a glad activist, soon to die of AIDS, provided a sense of Milk’s activism.

A couple of interviewee struck me personally. First, lesbian activist Sally Gearheart’s testimony of her work with Milk on the Proposition 6 campaign is very compelling, but her comments on the candlelight vigil and riots following the verdict are particularly poignant. Anne Kronenberg, who served as Milk’s campaign manager, provides the zeal and optimism of the youth who surrounded and supported Milk in his efforts. Last comes Tory Hartmann, who’s warmth on the conceal is only seconded by her connection with Harvey. She provides an emotional recollection of the candlelight march that will leave you in tears.

Coming to DVD, this film looks rich and original, due to UCLA and its preservation processes. In addition to the film, the DVD brings you a second disk loaded with special features, from interviews with the film makers, to an 25th anniversary update of the Milk legacy by those who knew him best. I was particularly touched watching the “Alternate ending” part, in which Jim Elliot discloses, after describing his maintain go as a straight man accepting homosexual Harvey Milk, learns his acquire daughter is also a lesbian, and that it was all okay, thereby completing validating Milk’s thoughts on coming out.

Not enough words can be said about “The Times of Harvey Milk”, a visionary, compelling documentary that should be shown, shared with everyone across this country. Milk’s legacy is not only for his homosexual brothers and sisters; it is a legacy for all of us. His legacy is that of tolerance towards all, aloof explain, fighting for what you own in, and above all else, objective having the best time of your life.

That Harvey Milk’s election to the San Francisco city council made him the first openly joyful elected official in the country certainly justifies this documentary search for at his life and career. The fact that this political event coincides with the ascendancy of Anita Bryant, the Lawful Majority, and California’s controversial Proposition 6 (which sought to construct it illegal to use any pleased person as a teacher in the state’s public school systems) gives the film a nail-biting second act. But add the fact that Milk and Mayor George Moscone were assassinated by fellow council person Dan White, and you have a riveting truth is stranger than fiction psycho-political drama. The scenes and remembrances of the spontaneous candlelight march from the Castro to City Hall by thousands of citizens are involving and stammer of a concern and loss that goes deeper than words. The film goes on to document the Dan White trial, the “Twinkie Defense”, and the violent reaction to verdict. Unfortunately, you can’t conception the film today without realizing that at the time these interviews were being filmed, AIDS was already invisibly working its map through the community and would soon all but wipe out this generation of tickled men in San Francisco. That’s a different account, I know (spy Favorite Threads: Stories from the Quilt ), but it’s like watching pleased passengers board the Substantial, talking about a future that you know will never happen for many of them.

I emphasized the “ADULT-THEMED” concept in my title because one of the best things about seeing a film like EASTERN PROMISES is that it is so adult, so uncompromised. Cronenberg gets to manufacture the movies he wants to, and it doesn’t have to be watered down or dumbed-down to form it sell to a colossal audience. We glean a brutal, sometimes squirm-inducing perceive at a underworld we haven’t seen like this before…and there’s no gloss, no pandering to a teen audience, no sappy ending, etc. etc. The ending is SATISFYING…but it isn’t easy or “Hollywood.”

Buy,Download, Or Stream Eastern Promises! Click Here

First of all, the script is outstanding. From the creator of another magnificent film about London’s “seamy underbelly,” DIRTY Dazzling THINGS…the set makes sense, the threads all near together and the characters are simply but sharply delineated. Yet at no time do I feel the themes are being spoon-fed. Also, some of the acts that are perpetrated on Viggo Mortensen’s character arrive the demolish of the film are acts of improbable betrayal…yet if you haven’t been paying attention, you might miss that. It’s not a super-complex site…but it doesn’t grab you by the hand and lead you from situation to dwelling.

Speaking of Mortensen…this is his best performance ever. Granted, Aragon is crown-jewel, and he handled it well…but those films were events, such spectacle that often what he simply needed to do was wear his costume, high-tail his horse and recognize vast. In EASTERN PROMISES, he has to execute us care about a very ghastly portion of work indeed. He’s also very stony-faced…so considerable of what we learn about him, especially early on, comes from very subtle work. Again, each word of the script is perfectly chosen, and Mortensen digs deep here. He’s not always my accepted actor…I actually wasn’t nuts about him in A HISTORY OF VIOLENCE (A film I otherwise greatly admired) …but he’s perfectly cast here. And of course, he’s astounding to eye in the now snide nude fight scene. It’s a minute bit distracting being aware of male full-frontal nudity flashing around…almost enough to steal one out of the scene…but the scene is so well staged that the sheer Injure of it soon wipes out any feeling of “hey, we procure to peer ALL of Viggo Mortensen.”

Buy,Download, Or Stream Eastern Promises! Click Here

Armin Mueller-Stahl plays the older patriarch of the Russian mafia family, and he’s the best of this type of character I’ve seen in awhile. You know the one…the worn gangster who is so sweet and loving to the youngsters in his family, so polite and chunky of grace and manners. Relate Brando in the wedding scenes of THE GODFATHER or even Paul Newman in early scenes of ROAD TO PERDITION. Stahl is even better…his eyes twinkle with charm. But boy, when the conceal drops and we observe the actual guy…peaceful soft-spoken and considered…he’s stunningly inappropriate. I really enjoyed seeing him again…it seems like it’s been awhile since he was in a film.

Vincent Cassel plays Stahl’s hot-headed son…another gangster cliche…the kid who is supposed to retract over the business, but is actually a bit of a moron and troublemaker. But again, the character has surprises up its sleeve. Also, Naomi Watts plays the nurse who brings a motherless baby unwittingly into this underworld…and she is reliably expedient. Her character doesn’t net to have all the dramatic flourishes…but Watts gives another patented, fully committed, fair performance. I maintain she may be our most under-rated actress, even though she has been nominated for awards and starred in many films…I judge she’s level-headed undervalued. EASTERN PROMISES won’t pick up her fresh fans or an Oscar…but she is composed very genuine.

Notice I didn’t talk great about the set. Others have done it better, and to be unbiased, I’d worship it if you unprejudiced went to perceive the film having small plan of what you were about to experience. It’s a brutal slouch…but it is burly of unexpected turns…not objective of status but of character. I’ll bet arrive year slay, this will calm be one of my favorites of the year! Highly, highly recommended for ADULT audiences!!

EASTERN PROMISES as written by Steven Knight and directed by David Cronenberg is one of the grittiest, insightful, and well-acted films of the year. Maintaining his enthusiastic watch for the dim side of life and the people who dwell in its shadows, Cronenberg has once again brought us characters so strongly etched on film that they will be remembered for many years.

The setting is London where lives the enigmatic Russian-born Nikolai Luzhin (Viggo Mortensen in an Oscar caliber performance) who serves as a driver for a cloaked mysterious Russian family, members of the Russian mafia called the Vory V Zakone, a bizarre brotherhood populated with men whose lives of crime are told in tattooed stories on their bodies. The head of the family is the aesthetic restaurateur Semyon (Armin Mueller-Stahl) whose son Kirill (Vincent Cassel) carries on the crime aspects of the family but shows no role of leadership in his dissipated life style. As the film opens we inspect the birth of a itsy-bitsy girl to a drug-addled mother Tatiana (Sarah-Jeanne Labrosse) : she dies during childbirth having been delivered by a midwife Anna (Naomi Watts) who herself has a history of a stillborn child. Anna finds a diary in Tatiana’s purse, saves it, and takes it to her uncle to translate it execute the Russian. Opening the diary opens shadowy secrets for Semyon and Kirill: Tatiana was apparently one of the many illegal Russian prostitutes imported by the Vory V Zakone crime syndication and was raped by Semyon whose daughter was born as Tatiana died. Anna’s investigation as to the baby’s heritage includes the invaluable wait on of Nikolai who despite his past has a soft site for Anna and her dilemma and it is the manner in which the interplay of Anna, Semyon, Kirill and Nikolai works out that brings the film to its conclusion.

The acting is impeccable with Mortensen, Watts, Cassell, and Mueller-Stahl at peak effect. Cameo roles by Sinéad Cusack and Jerzy Skolimowski, among others, are fully fleshed. The accents are believable and the multiple tattoos on Mortensen’s body (seen fully in the worthy ballyhooed bathhouse scene, more about killing than about voyeurism) match the murky, dank atmosphere well captured by the cinematographer Peter Suschitzky and echoed with the musical regain by Howard Shore. This is a tough movie for the squeamish to seek, but the narrative is righteous and the film is Cronenberg at his best. Grady Harp, December 07

Are you looking for a film that you can safely notice with your children? Have you seen most of the Disney catalogue? Well, happily–once in a while–someone other than Disney produces a film that can enchant young and traditional, and in 1958 Mr. George Pal did unbiased that with “Tom Thumb”. After producing several science fiction classics in the fifties, Mr. Pal and his crack special effects team location up shop in England for this winning musical fantasy, based on the noted fairy fable.

A bad, impartial wood-cutter, Jonathan (Bernard Miles) and his wife, Anne (Jessie Matthews) are granted three wishes by the Forest Queen (dazzling June Thorburn) for sparing her favourite tree. They basically bungle their wishes, but they are granted a son to raise. His name is Tom, and he is 5 1/2 inches great. Of course, being so microscopic, Tom has all sorts of keen adventures. Unfortunately, one of them involves innocently helping two crooks (the hilarious team of Terry-Thomas and Peter Sellers) seize a bag of gold, for which Tom’s recent parents are blamed. Luckily, Tom is able to eventually turn the tables on the crooks, with serve from a local “merry minstrel”

(affable Alan Young),who also has a crush on the Forest Queen, and we wind up with a very pleased ending!

Tom is played by one of the most talented and mighty performers in the history of cinema–Mr. Russ Tamblyn–an astounding dancer and acrobat with a very consuming personality. Even among this strong cast, Russ Tamblyn–all “5 1/2 inches” of him–stands colossal! The extended production number with Tom and the toys is a classic–a tribute to Mr.Tamblyn’s talent and Mr.Pal’s Oscar-winning (as it turned out) special effects team. You can witness how all that “puppetoon” experience paid off! A later scene where Tom puts on wooden shoes that can’t finish dancing is another highlight.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Tom Thumb! Click Here

As the “heavies”, Terry-Thomas and Peter Sellers are a matchless pair–with his rolling eyes, and devilish grin, Mr. Thomas gives this film exactly the type of “over-the-top” performance it needs, with Mr. Sellers as a perfect, dim-witted foil. They are perhaps the funniest duo since Laurel and Hardy.

The DVD is widescreen on one side, and beefy shroud on the other. The colour is radiant, especially the scenes where Tom is interacting with the toys. The sound is mono. Miss Peggy Lee collected the spicy salvage, with several songs that your children will be pleased (especially the “Yawning Man” sequence, voiced by Stan Freberg) –was there no demolish to Miss Lee’s talent?

Extras are sparse–brief biographies of Russ Tamblyn and George Pal (who directed as well as produced), and the film’s trailer.

“Tom Thumb” is the tickled result of two major talents combining their efforts to execute a timeless classic. Today George Pal is remembered and respected as a pioneer of imaginative film. As for Russ Tamblyn, this title role–perhaps more than any other–provides a showcase for his special gifts. How about 4 1/2 stars for a 5 1/2 streak star! Recommended for the entire family!

and the valid parts are objective as suitable today.

start off, of course, with the knowing sequences from george pal. if i am not erroneous, this was the final puppetoon animation he did, as he was then eager increasingly in directing feature length films. but if only for the yawning man and con-fu-shen, this film would be worth seeing.

add to that, the fantastic live performances by such as the underrated dancer russ tamblyn in the title role; the legendary jessie matthews; and a young peter sellers and terry thomas as advantageous droll villains. sadly, the adore fable between queenie and woody slows thing down, and even the usually amazing alan young cant build that piece of the movie. (incidentally, a year later young would turn in his finest performance in the george pal “time machine.̶ ;)

i have such fond memories of this movie, and it manages to live up to them — i would wholeheartedly recommend it, especially to fans of fantasy, dance, or puppetry. bravo!

In 1961, when The Met collected made road tours, a friend and I stood to hear a young Joan Sutherland articulate Lucia, so it was with high hopes that this DVD went into the player. In 1982, at the height of her talent, Dame Joan did not disappoint. Teamed with a cast that includued the sumptuous explain of Pablo Elvira as Enrico, and the graceful, poised tenor of the behind Alfredo Krause as Edgardo, this Lucia overwhelms the viewer, both visually and acoustically. The conductor is Dame Joan’s husband and coach, Richard Bonynge, arguably the finest conductor of bel canto opera. But the performance all comes down to Sutherland, and, for those who were not fortunate to have heard her before her retirement, this disc is overwhelming evidence of why she was referred to as “La Stupenda”! Vocally spectacular, with a range, fluidity and temperment that makes this as terminate to a perfect performance as one is likely to seek, Dame Joan literally brings the house down at the kill of the “excited scene”. Pioneer, once more, has demonstrated how well opera and DVD technology work together. Don’t miss this disc!!

But then, Sutherland is probably my all-time common soprano. I had the mammoth qualified fortune to glance a performance of this production at the Met when I lived in Manhattan at that time. Because the Met is such a expansive house (I sat in the orchestra piece), the sound on the video is remarkable better than at the live performance. Krause, in particular was difficult to hear, and Elvira’s deeper narrate often almost impossible to hear, even in the orchestra seats. Dame Joan is of course distinguished older than the heroine, but her difficulties both in explain and physical movement compose her seem that worthy more touching and vulnerable in the role, to me. The fact that her shriek is not the pristine, perfect instrument is was in the 60s and 70s, also, for me, adds emotion and expressiveness to this particular production. I will always be able to bask in this performance, and as a lover of vocal and musical beauty, that is quite a comfort to me. I highly recommend this particular version to anyone who loves the opera, and especially who admire Sutherland’s snort.

John (”Conan the Barbarian̶ ;) Milius wrote and directed this underrated, but valuable beach movie that is worthy more than first meets the peep.

What is most memorable is the terrific second unit mammoth wave cinematography by famous Imax and surf photgrapher Greg MacGillivray. But the undercurrent (no pun intended) is a troubling record that grew from Milius’ memories about his maintain surfer buddy friendships on the day — a colossal Wednesday — when Watts was going up in flames and the surf was peaking.

Almost a broad film that in retrospect was far and away more prescient than given credit at the time. Jan Michael Vincent, Gary Busey and William katt are perfect as the friends seeking meaning and purpose as they go through ten turbulent years starting in the mid-60s.

This title, like Monte Hellman’s “Two Lane Blacktop” and Dennis Hopper’s “Easy Rider” is a legendary film with a devoted cult following that looks at a specific time in America through the eyes of lost innocence.

“Huge Wednesday” is finally available in a pristine widescreen DVD transfer with an insightful, witty, and at times almost poetic commentary by writer director Milius.

This movie is regarded as a surf classic and rightly so. Slickly produced, consisting of a series of vignettes over 13 years it gives a non-surfing person a revealing insight into the surf culture. The still-thorny reveal of the Vietnam War is dealt with and the transition from the swinging sixties into the seventies is handled very well (a technique John Milius perfected in his 1983 classic Odd Valor which incidentally pre-dated the great hyped Rambo First Blood II by nearly two years) . The climax of the film is the surf footage at the kill depicting the legendary day of a lifetime, Enormous Wednesday. The only negative is the concept that the two stars, Jan Michael Vincent and Gary Busey threw away their lives after this movie due to drug addiction (Busey almost died from an overdose in 1994) . Another negative is that some of the surfing terminology in the book didn’t do it to the film. In the book, the car is referred to as “The Makeshift” - it isn’t in the film. Collected, if you cast these things out of your mind for 100 minutes you will experience something truly special. You won’t be disappointed.

My wife and I both agree, that this is about the best horseracing movie we’ve seen, all the procedure around–cast, direction, script, soundtrack. The premise is a movie cliche, of course, and the raze is powerful predictable. What makes this movie rise above all the others is mostly the reliable cast.

Kurt Russell looks like a Kentucky horse trainer. His run-down farm looks like the exact thing. Kris Kristoferson is his distant and mouthy father, a resplendent choice for the role. Dakota Fanning and Elizabeth Shue are impartial lawful in their parts–archetypical rather than stereotypical. The string music speaks of Kentucky, but not of the hills.

Morse plays the instrument of the sellout, money, power, and corruption, a sing that limited time horse trainers will spy as correct. The conflict here is between values, the slick money men vs. flesh-and-blood people. The Saudi princes accumulate a role in here, but they are neither bashed nor glorified. Kentuckians will peer many bit players in here too, including jockey Tammy Fox.

Based on a legal chronicle, as they say. The first half of the movie could be based upon a lot of just stories. A lot. The last half of the movie is a fantasy, but we happen to know some fantasies that came moral.

Not honest that an independent smalltime horseman can come by a great bustle, although that happens now and then–no, more often the device this fantasy works out is, that someone who loves horses gets to exercise a lifetime working with them, while supporting their family, and free of the corruption of drugs and the cheap and commercial snappily buck.

Independently poor–but by God independent.

Dakota Fanning’s novel horse film, “Dreamer”, was not a movie I was planning to discover. The trailer was kind of insensible and while I relish a suited horse myth there’s a lot out there factual now. But I got free tickets, so I went. And while “Dreamer” doesn’t come such gold standards as “National Velvet” or “The Unlit Stallion”, the film is a well-made and ultimately thrilling epic of a horse and its girl.

Fanning stars as Cale Crane, the latest in a long line of horse people in the Crane family. The Cranes have fallen on hard times: their horse farm is being sold off part by section, Mom has to take up shifts in a diner, and when one night a horse Mr. Crane is training takes a awful descend Dad loses his job and inherits the busted-up horse to boot.

Universally advised to establish the horse down, Crane (Kurt Russel) instead plans to fix her up objective enough so he can breed her. How that rather reasonable thought evolves into a notion to urge the horse, whose name “Sonador” means “dreamer” in Spanish, is the fun of the movie and what makes it a notch above the typical “inspirational” myth.

The first half of the film drags a bit (shots of clouds going by and grass standing tranquil don’t succor), but it gets better, and Fanning as usual is expansive. I conception the young kids in the audience I was with would be bored by the relatively tiresome tone, but they absolutely loved the movie, and for the entire last five minutes of the film they were cheering and yelling and you couldn’t hear what was going on in the film. Based on that reaction I give this film four stars and recommended it to families, especially those with any horse-loving girls. Objective justify to your kids that jumping off the house roof onto hay bales is a unpleasant plan, no matter what Fanning does.

I first saw South Pacific when it was released in 1958 at the age of 10, and remember being totally overwhelmed by the orchestrations, performances and photography. Over the years I have regularly heard the film trashed by critics and many members of the public, so I was animated to peek how I would answer to it now when I recently bought the video. Well, maybe it’s fair me, but I found the film as thrilling and fine as I did forty years ago. I agree with everyone else that it was a mistake to spend those colored filters in many of the sequences, but the film detached packs a heck of an emotional whallop, and I judge along with The King and I stands out as the most successful of the Rogers and Hammerstein shows establish on film. The weakest of the cast is John Kerr, who is somewhat wooden; however, Juanita Hall is beautiful as Bloody Mary (she will never be surpassed in the role she createwd on Braodway), Rossano Brazzi is thoroghly convincing as Emille DeBeque (even if he was dubbed by Giorgio Tozzi), and Mitzi Gaynor gives an unforgettable performance as Nelly Forbrush. Of all of the criticism one hears of South Pacific, to me the most puzzling is the bashing of Mitzi Gaynor, who to me is not only helpful but perfection in the role. I realize a lot of this probably stems from exasperate that Mary Martin didn’t bag the role and is basically sour grapes, but the fact is Ms. Martin was too veteran to be convincing in 1958. The scenes in which Ms. Gaynor struggles with her small-town prejudices are enchanting and very sincere, and when Bloody Mary brings Liat to her to regain Lieutenant Cable, who has been killed, it breaks one’s heart. Anyway, the movie tranquil knocks me out, even if that makes me, as Nelly Forbrush calls herself, a “knucklehead.” The unbelievable photography, elegant music, and theme of the need to triumph over bigotry which is calm so relevant even today, makes this film a 5-star winner in my book. As trite as it sounds, “They don’t beget ‘em like that anymore!”

This price modern edition of SOUTH PACIFIC is a must for all fans of the beloved Rodgers and Hammerstein classic. Based on characters and segments from James Michener’s “Tales of the South Pacific”, the yarn takes spot on the islands during the tail-end of World War II. A glorious young nurse from Arkansas, Ensign Nellie Forbush (Mitzi Gaynor), falls in cherish with a wealthy French plantation owner Emile de Becque (Rossano Brazzi) . Their relationship is tested when she discovers that he fathered two children with a now-dead Polynesian wife, and that he is wanted for the execute of a man in France. As Nellie confronts her maintain fears and prejudices, the shapely Lt. Joe Cable (John Kerr) falls helplessly in like with Bali Ha’i island beauty Liat (France Nuyen) . Filling out the comedy in the anecdote are Bloody Mary (Juanita Hall), the wheeler-dealer with a heart of pure gold; and Luther Billis (Ray Walston), the tattooed leader of the beach-bound troops.
